Being able to understand a student's background and identity is imperative to being able to reach them as educators. I have written down in the document attached below similarities and differences between my ELL student, T, and myself, and have found multiple differences in our backgrounds that could affect the way we act in our everyday life. These differences need to be carefully observed to maintain progress and continue to build upon ever growing relationships between teachers and students.

Hi Patrick! Your identity comparison chart is very well done. I see that you have, what appears to be, more differences than similarities. Does this often pose a challenge to you in trying to make meaningful connections with your ELL partner? In what ways have you been able to overcome your differences? Perhaps during your tutoring sessions you have been able to highlight some of these differences and learn more about Bengali/Indian culture?

How have you managed to overcome cultural differences in order to form an effective teaching relationship? On the other hand, do you share any interests or roles which may aid in finding similarities between the two of you? Keeping identity in the back of your mind will indeed be a very useful strategy in developing professional relationships in the future.
